party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or
any place subject to their jurisdiction."
14th Amendment: "Citizenship
rights and equal protection of the laws, and was proposed in response to issues
related to former slaves following the American Civil War."
15th Amendment: "Granted African
American men the right to vote by declaring that the "right of citizens of
the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States
or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of
servitude."

In the years following the Civil War the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands , provided assistance to tens of thousands of former slaves and impoverished whites in the Southern States and the District of Columbia 2. The war had liberated nearly four million slaves and destroyed the region's cities, towns, and plantation-based economy. 3.The challenge of establishing a new social order, founded on freedom and racial equality, was enormous.
